Creative Development for Artists, Writers and all Artistic Creativity

According to this morning’s radio, today, January 2nd is the most depressing day of they year. The experts seem to trot out a different day every January to announce this - but I can see where they’re coming from today.

The (enjoyably?) Depressing Bit Before the Brightness and Sunshine

Here in Sheffield, England, it’s 8:30am and as well as it being the first day back at work for myself and most others, it is a crushingly dismal morning. First of all -  it didn’t bother to get light today! The sky is so uniformly dull and grey that there isn’t even the slightest hint of the hidden sun. Only the faintest of breezes stirs the leafless, lifeless trees. And we have a dampening, cheerless drizzle that’s absolutely and gloomily perfect.

The words ‘blanket’ and ‘wet’ come to mind.

It’s easy to let days like this get to us - partly because for some unfathomable reason we actually want it to get to us. We want to wallow in our sorrow. We crave the togetherness our shared misery brings. We’re back at work - boring dull work (even if our job actually isn’t boring, today we want it to be)… gloomy skies and dark and sullen days… don’t you dare make me smile… I don’t want to smile…

WELL - SOD THAT FOR A LARK

Focus on the miserable and grey and that’s how we will feel.

Zest for Life

But we carry inside us both the memories and hopes of joy, success and sheer zest for life. So focus on that. Bring out your inner sunshine and let it illuminate this start to your brilliant new year. Visualise a beaming smile in your minds eye and then make it real and dazzle someone with it.

Don’t just read this. I challenge you to close your eyes for a second and feel that bright and shining energy that’s bursting to get out. With all your senses, feel the warm kiss of sunshine now.

And now it’s time to feel the inspiration of all the great things you are going to achieve this year - especially the achievements of your best creative self. Make a promise to yourself now to enjoy your creativity and truly express yourself in your art - soon!

Don’t let the circumstances of this apparently depressing day govern the way you have to feel. How dare it? The choice is yours. So choose.

Yes. I feel much better for that. A very happy New Year to everyone.
